An agonist drug or substance binds to a brain receptor and produces a response that is the same as the substance that normally binds to the receptor, such as a neurotransmitter or hormone.
E.g. MDMA is an agonist that stimulates the release and inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) and, to a lesser extent, other neurotransmitters.
