A prodrug is a biologically inactive substance that is converted into an active drug once it is inside the body. Prodrugs are designed to improve the therapeutic efficacy of a drug by enhancing its absorption, distribution, metabolism, or elimination. E.g. Psilocybin is primarily a pro-drug of psilocin, while psilocin is the active drug responsible for the psychedelic effects.
